MnDOT meets with Businesses to Answer Questions June 12

Meeting Notes from June 12, 2012
MnDOT and Victoria Businesses met to discuss the Hwy 5 Construction Project.

Thanks to those that were able to attend Tuesday’s meeting.  I think it was very helpful for MnDOT to hear directly from businesses regarding concerns/comments.  For those that were not able to attend, below is a summary of the discussion.  MnDOT does have traffic counts completed and will share those results with us next week.

Thanks,
Holly Kreft

Stage 2B Closure

  • Tentatively still on schedule to begin July 6th, but will continue to keep businesses updated on exact date as it gets closer. (This will close Hwy 5 from Minnewashta Pkwy West to 78th Street in Victoria)
  • Advance warning signs will go up 7 days in advance of closure

West Hwy 5 Work

  • Scheduled to end June 15th, but may be delayed due to weather
  • Concerns with flaggers not using radios to communicate lane shifts – MnDOT is following up with the contractor on this concern

Pipe Replacements

  • Started on June 13th
  • Done on Friday June 15th  weather dependent
  • Two pipes being replaced – one at Quamoclit Street and one at 80th Street
  • No detour, will be done one half at a time
  • Will be resurfaced after replacement done
  • MnDOT will check on why pipe at 80th Street being replaced

Signage

  • Diane reiterated that MnDOT has to communicate that the Highway is closed, but has coupled that with the message that it is open to Victoria businesses
  • Questioned if reduced speed signs could be placed on Hwy 5 and if they would be effective due to more speed variance/safety risks
  • Questioned if “Fines Double in Work Zones” signs could be added

Safety

  • Raised concerns about amount of traffic on Stieger Lake Lane and lack of regional/commuter traffic using official detour
  • MnDOT will have results of traffic counts and will share with City to share with businesses
  • Noted concern for safety of construction workers
  • City is concerned with pedestrian safety, particularly at intersection of Stieger Lake Lane and Victoria Drive
  • Questioned if City could have Sheriff’s office direct traffic during peak times at that intersection
  • Cara noted that the City has discussed the potential of temporary stop signs at that intersection
  • The concern was raised about the contractor trucks making u-turns on Hwy 5 at Auburn Drive – MnDOT is following up with the contractor on this issue
  • Raised the concern about dust control, grading, and traffic on Kochia Lane

82nd Street (MnDOT is following up on this with the City of Chaska)

  • MnDOT is doing counts on the road
  • Concerns with amount of traffic and speeds
  • Dust control has been scheduled for the Victoria portion of the road
  • Potential that it could close to through traffic if determined to be a safety concern by City of Chaska
